Dr. Jenny Tufenkian is a licensed naturopathic physician and clinical instructor at the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. She has been in private practice since 2000.
For Dr. Tufenkian, health is a fascinating journey she takes with her patients. It is a partnership between physician and patient that will ultimately lead to optimal health. Her role is part teacher, part educator, part counselor and, of course, healer. She listens carefully to her patient’s concerns and crafts a treatment approach that is as unique as each individual. Her patient’s role is to learn about their health issues and take proactive lifestyle steps. Together doctor and patient form a partnership that will ultimately lead to a discovery of the root cause of health concerns and create a space in which the patient can begin to heal.
Dr. Tufenkian has a true family practice. She works with children, teens, their parents and grandparents in optimizing their health. She has a special interest in working with difficult chronic health concerns such as obesity, hormone imbalances, diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and auto-immune disease. She is also well versed in mood disorders, women’s health and many childhood/teen issues such as poor sleep patterns, allergies and immune support.
Dr. Tufenkian earned her degree and completed her residency at the National College of Natural Medicine. During her residency, she enjoyed external rotations in OHSU’s Women’s Clinic, Emmanuel Hospital’s Burn and Chronic Wound Center, Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital, and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. She recently completed advanced training in Psych K, a therapeutic method that has yielded profound results in treating the underlying, unconscious beliefs that impact a patient’s health and well-being. She is also trained in Bowen, a form of bodywork used to treat musculoskeletal pain and provide general relaxation.
A significant focus in Dr. Tufenkian’s treatment plans is the importance of proper nutrition. Her love for food as medicine is seen in her innovative, “Doctor in the Kitchen” program. The program addresses the unique dietary needs for a wide variety of conditions like diabetes, infertility, chronic weight gain, cancer, MS and general health. Dr. Tufenkian creates recipes and individualized menu plans for patients and joins them in their home to teach them how to shop, cook and enjoy a healthful diet.
In addition to Doctor in the Kitchen, Dr. Tufenkian has created a dynamic program for patients suffering from chronic weight gain called Full Health Weight Loss. The program recognizes that weight gain is frequently a symptom of a greater problem. Sustained weight loss is achieved by examining the emotional, psychological and lifestyle components of overeating.
