Dr. Gene Bowman is a clinician, researcher and prolific writer. He is a graduate of the National College of Natural Medicine, the oldest school for graduate study of naturopathic medicine in the United States. His post-graduate clinical training includes completion of a physician supervised internship and residency focused on applying naturopathic medicine in practice. Dr. Bowman is a clinical instructor in the department of neurology at Oregon Health & Science University (www.ohsu.edu/orccamind) and adjunct faculty at the Helfgott Research Institute of NCNM (www.helfgott.org).
In 2005, he earned a National Research Service Award from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine making him the first NCNM graduate to earn such an award. This funding for complementary and alternative medicine in neuroscience and stress has enabled him to combine clinic practice with research interests exploring the relationship between the nervous (brain), cardiovascular (heart and blood), and digestive systems.
His publications have covered areas related to the aging gut and brain, digestion and nutrition, blood-brain barrier function, and dementia. His most notable papers to date have been published in Neurology and the international journal, Aging Health, "Alzheimer's disease and the blood-brain barrier: past, present, and future". Dr. Bowman frequently presents on complementary and alternative medicine for disorders of the nervous, cardiovascular and digestive systems. Some of the more formal presentations have included the Alzheimer's Disease Association, American Academy of Neurology, Symposium for Portland Area Research on Complementary and Alternative medicine, Linus Pauling Institute's Diet and Optimal Health conference and a popular seminar series, Functional Gastroenterology (www.functionalgastroenterology.com)
Dr. Bowman balances his professional life with soccer (www.opsl.org), telemark skiing, kayaking, listening to live music and sharing meals and hearty laughs with friends.
